PUPILS at Holy Trinity Primary School are leading the charge to have traffic lights and speed humps installed near their school in Wantirna South.
At last week's Knox Council meeting, the pupils submitted three petitions calling for action.
One hundred people signed a petition asking the council to install traffic lights at the intersection of Wallace Road and High Street Road.
Another 117 people signed a petition calling for speed humps on Wallace Road. A third petition, with 97 signatures, called for speed humps along Zerfas Street.
The petitions have been driven by the students. Grade 6 pupil Siobhan said there had been crashes at the intersection of Wallace and High Street roads.
"There isn't always a lollypop lady there, and if someone tries to cross the road they might get run over. There's a lot of traffic there."
Another pupil, Lauren, said drivers sometimes got frustrated.
Classmate Jarrod said he was forced to run across the road because of speeding vehicles on Wallace Road.
He said speed humps should be installed. "They speed around the corner and you can't see them."
Grade 5 pupil Nathan said speed humps were needed along Zerfas Street because it was a school zone.
"Cars are speeding and doing burnouts. It's only a 40km/h zone, but cars speed because there's nothing around it, really, besides the houses and school."
"I want speed humps for the safety of the kids who go to school."
Teacher Carmel Durrant praised the pupils for their passion to improve safety around their school. The petitions started as part of a school project where pupils had to write to councillors and politicians about concerns in their community.
"We've had some feedback from some of them, so it's been worthwhile for the children. It's about taking action and not just a piece of paper which doesn't do anything meaningful. It's about participating in society."
Knox Council was contacted for comment but did not respond by deadline.
