KNOX residents have been asked to prepare for the storms that winter may bring.
Speaking as part of StormSafe Week, Knox State Emergency Service volunteer Peter Mitcham said the time between now and winter was a good opportunity for people to take a look at their property.
Mr Mitcham said residents should look for overhanging branches that could come into contact with powerlines or guttering.
Blocked gutters and downpipes could lead to water coming through downlights in the home.
Mr Mitcham said it was also a good time to talk to neighbours and discuss the best way to tackle tree branches that may be overhanging neighbouring properties.
"The majority of cases we go to are maintenance issues or preventable callouts. It's the perfect opportunity now to look at your property when the ground is reasonably dry."
Mr Mitcham said Knox SES took 2063 calls after last month's hailstorm.
"It took us the best part of three solid weeks to get through the bulk of that, and we are still attending 20-30 calls a week."
He said before householders decided to fix a problem around their home themselves, they should "assume the worst".
"If you feel comfortable with a ladder and have one in good quality - and you're happy to get up two to three steps to reach in your gutter - that's fine.
"But we don't recommend that people get up on to the roof. Anyone who lives in Melbourne knows weather can change very quickly."
Mr Mitcham said cracked tiles and debris could make a roof more slippery than it appeared.
StormSafe Week runs until April 26.
