FOOTY fans in Melbourne's outer east converged on Knox Gardens Reserve last Wednesday when AFL heroes and stars of Channel Nine's The Footy Show came to town.
Despite grey skies and heavy rain, about 700 Eastern Football League junior players attended the Almost Little Legends clinic.
The senior players of tomorrow were put through their paces by current players including Matthew Richardson and Xavier Clarke, and Footy Show personalities Garry Lyon and Billy Brownless.
Hawthorn premiership star Shane Crawford said children really enjoyed football clinics featuring their heroes. "The kids love it. They have a great time and that's what it's really all about. It's a great initiative."
Although Crawford grew up in the country and rarely had access to AFL players, he said there was one occasion where he was part of a clinic. "I never forgot it. It was nice to get out there and kick the footy. I was in awe of the players."
Crawford said children got a tremendous amount out of football clinics, even if they were coached by a player who wasn't from the side they barracked for.
"Whenever they see the guys on TV playing, they take a special interest in how they're going because they know they have a connection with them."
Lilydale resident Jessica, 10, is a Geelong supporter, and said she had looked forward to the day.
Port Adelaide fan Jake, also from Lilydale, said it was the first time he had been to a footy clinic such as this. The 12-year-old said he loved football.
Donvale father and Carlton supporter Greg Stramrlos said the day was good for the kids to practise their skills.
