OPPOSITION transport spokesman Terry Mulder claims the early-bird scheme is a con because commuters have to pick up the tab for cancelled or late services.
"If a train that is due to arrive in the city before 7am is cancelled and the result is that commuters pass through city rail station barriers later than 7am, Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky makes them pay a fare," he said.
However, a Government spokesman denied early-bird commuters were penalised if their train was running late.
"There is a level of flexibility that allows customers whose trains are running late to still exit the barriers for a period of time after 7am".
