Electrical fault suspected in tip fire

01 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
A NEW mattress shredder is thought to be responsible for a tip fire last week at Wantirna South that caused $800,000 damage.

The fire started about 1.10pm on Australia Day at the rear of Knox Council's waste transfer station in George Street.

Knox CFA group officer Jim Read said that, at this stage, the shredder appeared to be the cause of the blaze.

More than 100 firefighters attended, including 15 crews from Dandenong Ranges, Knox, Dandenong and Patterson River, as well as police and State Emergency Service.

Residents in Wantirna South and Scoresby were advised to keep their windows shut as a precaution.

George Street resident Zed Cecelja, however, said he wasn't told anything about the fire. "But if it was dangerous, I am sure we would have been notified."

Knox Council's chief executive Graeme Emonson said the council would now review the station's safety procedures with the CFA, although the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical.
