Fit for independence

18 Aug, 2010 12:00 AM
A KNOX support service is providing a helping hand to residents who want to maintain their mental and physical fitness.

The Villa Maria Rehabilitation Centre in Wantirna runs a range of support services for older people and people with a disability in Knox and surrounding suburbs.

Co-manager Julie Myers said the centre was aimed at people aged 65 and over who wanted to remain independent.

"We provide group programs for all sorts of diagnostic problems ranging from back pain and shoulder pain through to balance problems and general fitness issues."

Recovery from lower limb problems and strokes is also part of the program.

Ms Myers said the centre took a "full allied health approach" to a person's recovery.

"With most of our groups, the client is not only having physiotherapy to regain function, but they're also having access to a dietitian, occupational therapist and speech pathology."

Ms Myers said the exercises depended on clients' individual needs. "People with back injuries would practise core management exercises. Those with lower limb injuries will aim to strengthen their leg muscles to maintain their flexibility."

Ms Myers said being part of a group program motivated clients. "Our main aim is to provide peer-to-peer support. We find that has a large impact on people so they don't feel isolated."

Ms Myers said it was rewarding to see how clients' fitness improved. "It's amazing how far they can progress. They get involved in their own life and take responsibility."

From 1pm on July 28, the centre is holding free education sessions focusing on healthy exercise, practical strength training and tai chi. Details: 98007255.
