A NEW Hindu temple in the City of Knox is testament to the area's growing popularity as a multicultural hub.
A senior Hindu figure says Knox is now one of the most popular municipalities for Hindus to live.
Hindu Community Council of Victoria president Pandit Abhay Awasthi said he believed there were thousands of Hindus living in Knox.
His estimate is an increase on the official Australian Bureau of Statistics census figures in 2006 which counted 1983 Hindus in the area.
The Shree Swaminarayan Temple opened late last month in Boronia and there are two other temples at The Basin and Bayswater.
The Boronia temple is the only Tujrati temple in Victoria, and held a week-long opening ceremony at the end of January.
Mr Awasthi said many of the Hindus in Knox were new migrants to Australia and moved to the area for cheap flats and affordable rent.
Many either worked in the retail industry or studied and the area was becoming a "real hub of the Indian community".
Shree Swaminarayan Temple assistant secretary Manoj Varsani said numbers increased when zone 3 public transport tickets were phased out in 2007.
Suburbs in Knox became more accessible to reach via public transport, making it a centralised location for worship.
The temple has 75 registered members and many more casual attendees who have moved to the area from India, Kenya and United Kingdom.
About 60-65 of the registered members live in the local community and Mr Varsani said that's why Knox was chosen for the temple in Knox and not the CBD.
A multicultural strategic plan approved by Knox Council last week aims to identify and address issues affecting multicultural communities in Knox.
