A COMMUNITY hub for The Basin is a step closer to reality with the State Government yesterday announced funds for a feasibility study.
The hub would be located at disused land at The Basin Primary School site and have community health facilities, a basketball court, library services and multipurpose rooms among the possible features.
Monbulk MP James Merlino said The Basin Primary School and The Basin Community House were "at the heart of The Basin, but there are a lot of constraints as well".
"The Basin Community House is on a tiny pocket of land, which is really inhibiting to deliver services and programs. There is also difficulty with car parking.
"But you've also got a fantastic primary school on a huge parcel of land.
"So we've initiated some discussions to see what we can do to deliver better community services and activities."
Mr Merlino said the Department of Education would contribute $30,000 to the study, which would identify "what we need in The Basin" and involve community consultation.
However, with a study likely to cost between $60,000-$100,000, Mr Merlino said the Government would also enter discussions with Knox Council.
"A feasibility study requires a lot of work and we do need the support of Knox Council."
Additional funding may also be available through the Government's Community Development Fund.
Community house co-ordinator Heather McTaggart said the house was now so busy some programs had to be run off-site. "We've only got three rooms in the house and we're using a kitchen as a classroom."
Primary school principal Graeme Russell said if the hub went ahead, he envisaged the school and the community house sharing each other's facilities.
Knox councillor John Mortimore said it was an exciting project.
"If this centre goes ahead, the community house will have a home that will cater for all its own needs as well as those of the school and the rest of the community."
