A NEW community hub for The Basin is one step closer, with the state government contributing extra funds for a feasibility study.
The hub, which will be located at The Basin Primary School site, could potentially be a new home for sports and recreational facilities, a library, a maternal health centre, and an expanded community house.
The hub was proposed earlier this year. The state government increased its contribution for a feasibility study from $30,000 to $60,000, and Knox Council put in $20,000.
Among those set to benefit from a community hub is The Basin Community House.
Co-ordinator Heather McTaggart said an expanded community house would provide additional education and training opportunities.
"We're filling classes to capacity at the house. We can run great community development programs for socially isolated people and seniors, so to have that multi-faceted facility will just strengthen this part of the world."
Ms McTaggart said she would welcome more training rooms, learning spaces and public meeting places.
The Basin Primary School principal Graeme Russell said the school saw a community hub as an opportunity to extend its existing programs, including sport, drama and music.
Cr John Mortimore said the hub would bring the community together. Monbulk MP James Merlino said there would be an extensive consultation process involving the school, community house and residents.
