A KNOX choir is uniting people of all abilities through song.
Based in Bayswater, the All-Stars Choir is 80 members strong, drawing most of its performers from support groups in Melbourne's outer east.
At the beginning of the year, the choir moved from Scope's Wantirna centre to the Knox Community Arts Centre.
Choir co-ordinator Peter Ashmore said it was important for the choir to be taken out of a disability setting. "It's in a mainstream community arts setting [now] where they've got the opportunity to connect with other artists who have similar interests, and vice versa.
"It now has enough momentum that if people pull out, others will come in and it will keep going, which is what we're aiming at."
Since it began 10 years ago, the choir has performed around Melbourne and in regional Victoria.
From early performances at nursing homes, the choir has sung at concerts for International Disability Day, conferences and held public performances. The singers choose the music themselves, performing everything from Danny Boy to John Farnham and Bee Gees songs. Mr Ashmore said the choir played an important role in showing people with a disability could play an active role in contributing to society.
