Knox cops biggest hit

10 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
THE Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed what Knox residents observed during Saturday's storm: the hail stones that left a trail of destruction were unusually large.

"We had a report of some very large hail [in Knox] on Saturday, probably in excess of eight-centimetre pieces of hail, which is on the very big side," said BOM forecaster Peter Blake.

In the aftermath of the storm, more than 2300 Knox residents called the SES for help.

The damage bill is expected to run into millions of dollars.

Mr Blake said some areas were harder hit than others. "It went through a wide area of the state, but certainly the northern and eastern suburbs bore the brunt."

According to the bureau, about 33millimetres of rain fell in the Scoresby area between 9am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday, of which 24.6millimetres fell between 3.17pm and 7pm on Saturday.
