FOR Knox residents, fashion doesn't need to come with a hefty price tag.
With the Spring Racing Carnival just around the corner, many racegoers are on the lookout for sharp suits and gorgeous dresses.
The perfect outfit may be closer to home than they think, with Boronia library hosting a spring racing carnival fashion parade.
The event, held in conjunction with Salvos Stores, will showcase a range of recycled clothing and accessories. Goods on show will be for sale, with all proceeds going to Salvos Stores.
The fashion show was the idea of Boronia library manager Linda Dalziel, who said she wanted to do something for the community.
"I wanted to show people you don't need a fortune to look good. The Salvos are also a good organisation right here in the community."
Ms Dalziel said recycled clothing was an increasingly popular subject among borrowers of books and magazines.
She has a keen interest in recycled fashion and occasionally runs a stall at Camberwell Market. Her latest bargain is a dress she picked up in Camberwell for just $25, originally worth $300.
Ms Dalziel said some people sold clothes after wearing them to just one or two special occasions such as a wedding or birthday party.
The fashion parade will feature women modelling dresses with matching hats, handbags and shoes. The men will model jackets, trousers, shirts and ties.
Salvos Stores area manager Heather Webb said customers were conscious of their impact on the environment and also looking for something easy on the hip pocket.
"Buying pre-loved goods from Salvos Stores solves both these problems."
The fashion parade is at the Boronia library, Park Crescent, at 7pm on September 17. Entry is free, but bookings are essential. Details: 9762 4099.
