Nurses on call for mental heath

03 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
A NURSING program is providing much needed mental health support for Knox residents.

Run by the Knox Division of General Practice, the free mental health service provides support for people who have symptoms of depression and anxiety or a long-term mental condition.

Dr Wendy Bissinger said the Federal Government-funded service was introduced in 2007 after gaps were identified in mental health services and following lobbying from GPs.

Dr Bissinger said having the GPs linked to the mental health service made it more accessible for patients.

She said seeing a mental health service could have less of a stigma for patients than seeing other mental health practitioners.

The mental health nurse works with a patient's doctor, helping make regular assessments.

An unlimited number of sessions with mental health nurses are also provided following the establishment of a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

Dr Bissinger said the aim of the program was to not only provide steady progress, but also to prevent admission to hospital.
