WITH more than 300 outer-eastern motorists under 25 having been caught over the legal blood-alcohol limit in the past year, police fear their message may have been lost on young drivers.
Police statistics show 337 people aged 18-25 were caught drink-driving in Maroondah, Knox and the Yarra Ranges in the year to May 31.
Of those, 162 were P-plate drivers. The highest reading from a P-plater was 0.199 and the highest from an under-25 driver was 0.367.
The results have left eastern division 2 traffic adviser Senior Sergeant Steve Rosewarne fuming.
"When you're looking at the demographic where you assume the drink-driving message is home and hosed, it's the young generation.
"It's this age group who get the message through schools, their 120 hours of learning and from their parents. But it's just not getting through."
Senior Sergeant Rosewarne said motorists caught drink-driving risked losing their licences.
More serious offenders also risked going to court.
He said motorists could expect police to be testing at venues hosting Eastern Football League and Yarra Valley District Mountain Football League finals this month.
