Salvos to work with police on investigation

25 Nov, 2009 11:54 AM
THE Salvation Army has said it will fully co-operate with a police investigation into claims of secret burials at Bayswater Boys Home.

Spokesman Brad Halse said claims made by Garfield resident Rod Braybon which date back to acts allegedly committed 50 years ago, had not surfaced before.

He did not know whether Salvation Army officers or other employees had been convicted for alleged abuses at the home, and would not comment on "individual cases" described by Mr Braybon.

"If Mr Braybon has any significant evidence of this sort, we'll support the process of law and the justice system.

"I'm not responding specifically about Bayswater Boys Home but there have been some instances when Salvation Army officers and people employed by the Salvation Army in assistant roles were brought before the courts and convicted."

After last week's Federal Government apology to former wards of state, the Salvation Army "reiterated" an apology to children in its care subjected to abuse or maltreatment.

"We acknowledge there were children that did not receive the level of love and care that each child deserves," Mr Halse told the Journal.

"That's why we continue to work with those [former wards of the state] who come to us. We're very happy to help them work through their time spent in our homes."
