ROB and Val Henry have spent years creating a beautiful garden in their Boronia home for their family and friends to enjoy.
Now they will open their gates for the public to see the fruits of their labour as part of Open Gardens Australia.
Mr Henry, 59, works as an engineer but on the weekends he and his wife dedicate themselves to gardening.
Their garden has plants native to Australia because the couple wanted to change the perception that native plants were wild, bushy and unattractive.
"We place them in more traditional settings and people come and say they're surprised that natives can actually look really nice," Mr Henry said.
The couple have lived in Boronia for 25 years and the garden has constantly changed to suit the needs of their growing family. "What was lawn is now wetlands, what was a kids' playground became an external room," Mr Henry said.
The evolving garden is based around the idea of 'multiple rooms' and the whole garden can't be seen from any one point.
"We would love people to wander through and feel enticed to explore. There are plenty of areas to sit, sculptures to look at and subtle things you might not see when you first walk past."
Mr Henry said would-be gardeners shouldn't be disheartened if their first gardening effort wasn't what they dreamt of. "You learn by experience and all locations suit different plants. You need to put in the effort."
The garden address is 3 Eugenia Court, Boronia, and it will be open between 10am and 4.30pm this Saturday and Sunday. Entry to the garden is $6 for adults, with proceeds going to Australian Rotary Health.
