 Batting collapse sinks Gully's dream

Batting collapse sinks Gully's dream

10 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
UPWEY Tecoma was the first team to book a grand-final berth in the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association's Knox Tavern Cup grand finals when it defeated Ferntree Gully by six wickets.

The majority of semi-finals appeared to be heading into Monday's reserve day when a massive storm struck the Dandenongs about 2.50pm on Saturday.

Ferntree Gully lost its first wicket at 32 before losing 5-10 to slump to 6-73 with only Jayden Bradbury (39) getting started.

Bad light stopped play and was followed shortly afterwards by rain and hail stones the size of golf balls.

The Upwey clubrooms were flooded by the downpour.

The Gully did not recover on day two and was eventually dismissed for 100 with impressive performances from Ben Wood (3-16) and skipper Paul Wilson (4-41) from 21 overs. The final will be Wilson's last game in the FTGDCA before his move to northern Victoria.

In the other semi-final, at Kings Park, Johnson Park got off to a solid start at 1-49 until Upper Gully pegged it back before the storm, having the Sharks at 4-79 in an even contest.

On Sunday, Bryn Gaunt (56) and Warrick Steele pushed the score to 155 before the Kings bowling attack of Jay Colee and Alister Lord took the last six wickets for just 15 runs.

Set 171, the Kings were under the pump at stumps and fell to 5-55 with experienced batsmen Paul Henry and Jay Colee at the crease. Unfortunately for the Kings on day three, the batting order failed to dig in under pressure and they never threatened the target.

■In Decoite Shield, South Belgrave restricted Knoxfield to 165 after the Knights got off to a good start at 2-80. In reply, South was travelling well at 2-61 but relied on Darren Ray once too often. They crumbled, losing 8-18 to be bundled out for 118.

Footballers were given a fright by Knox who were cruising at 3-132 only to be all out for 194. When bad light stopped play, the top side was 153 with six wickets in hand and passed its target five down on Monday.
