Fightback all in vain as Baysie goes down

03 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
BAYSWATER recovered from a first-innings defeat to almost overcome Kew in a Victorian Sub District Cricket Association clash last week.

A disappointing batting display had Bayswater all out for 121 in its first innings. Top scorer Julian Russell (49 not out) and opener Dean Connell (24) were the only batsmen to reach double figures.

Francis Gill took 4-29 for Kew and Sam McTaggart chipped in with two wickets.

After a shaky start when they were reduced to 4-13, a strong partnership between Shane Collins and McTaggart got Kew over the line.

With nothing to lose, Bayswater's batsmen took to the Kew attack in their second innings.

Bayswater piled on 3-136 in just 25 overs, with Russell (37) and Daniel Adams (45) leading the way.

Bayswater almost pulled off a remarkable outright win, with Kew eventually finishing at 6-40 when stumps were drawn.

Bayswater is 13th on the VSDCA North-East first XI ladder.

They will face 12th-placed Endeavour Hills on Saturday at Sydney Pargeter Reserve, in the last game of the season.
