Seville snatches win to keep final hopes alive

24 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
SEVILLE has kept alive its hopes of making the Yarra Valley Cricket Association DJ Strachan Shield finals with a fighting victory over Healesville on a heavily trimmed Queens Park oval.

Having to defend its 151 from the first day, Seville restricted Healesville to 133. Ishara Amarasinghe took 4-44 and Dean Troyahn 2-4.

Hoddles Creek gave ladder-leader Wandin a tight contest by reaching 204, just 28 short of a win. Scott Simmonds made 46 not out and Jeff Crew 36 as all knuckled down in an endeavour to reach the required tally. Wandin's Jackson Wright took 4-64.

Coldstream 4-190 (A Evans, 69, Colin Rice, 45 not out) defeated Gruyere 134. Gruyere was asked to bat again and at stumps was 0-59 (Jack Blain, 36 not out, Aaron Violi, 18 not out).

In a close encounter at Yarra Junction, visitor Silvan got home by just six runs. Yarra Junction made 189 (Stephen Flutter, 56, David Lever, 51; D Linton, 3-18) only to see Silvan edge to 195 (Clint Sharman, 44; Brad Jones, 4-31).

In the match of the round, Woori Yallock at home needed to chase down Warburton Millgrove's 255 from day one but fell 38 short with a score of 207 (Greg Selby, 58; Dam Egan, 6-65).

THERE were some high scores across the grade, led by Warburton Millgrove, which made 205 (T Heyward, 44) only to lose to Healesville 4-387 (B Dolan, 100 not out, Michael Sawyer, 96). The win puts Healesville close to the top of the ladder.

Wandin at home was all out for 163 and then made 6-107 in its second innings. It was still enough to defeat Yarra Junction, which could manage only 129.

Yarra Glen scored 235 on day one and needed to bowl well to keep the Tigers out on a fast outfield.

Woori Yallock batted steadily but was dismissed for 180 (Adam Dunn 59).

Jamie Holland and Jon Woods did the damage once again for Yarra Glen with 4-37 and 4-27 respectively in a win that leaves Yarra Glen with a chance for a final-four place in their round 12 match against Yarra Junction.

In round 12 DJ Strachan Shield, Healesville hosts Warburton at Queens Park in their Team of the Century event. Warburton may well upset the party here, Hoddles Creek hosts Seville, which must win to have any chance of a semi final berth. With injuries and unavailabilities for Seville along with the Hoddles Creek performance in round 11 against top side Wandin, this could help Hoddles Creek win. Mt Evelyn travels to Wandin in a match that the visitors need to win to ensure a final-four placement.
