VSDCA: Veteran no stranger to big scores

01 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
BAYSWATER veteran Darryl Stranger wound back the clock to lead his side to a vital win over Brighton in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association at Brighton Beach Oval on Saturday.

The 49-year-old club stalwart made a smashing 96 not out from 101 balls to lead his side past Brighton's 151 and finish on 206.

Waters captain Sean Flynn said Stranger showed three seasons captaining the club's seconds hadn't slowed his run-scoring skills.

"We thought we were a bit light on for experience and batsmen who could score quickly so we brought him back into the side and he has had a nice little season."

Flynn said the only disappointment for the side was not being able to get Stranger to his century.

"It was a bit unfortunate that he ran out of partners and couldn't get to three figures. But you could see the quality of the innings from by the way he scored his 96 in 101 balls."

Stranger's innings also proved vital as the Waters had fallen to 6-98 before his run-making took them to victory.

The win has boosted the Waters ladder position as they're now a game ahead of Brighton in seventh place, tied on points with top-six sides Croydon (sixth) and Elstenwick (fifth).

Flynn also praised the work of his bowlers the previous week in keeping Brighton to 151."It was a really important game because he needed to get that win ahead," he said. "Now we have to do it again next match when they host Malvern at Bayswater Oval.

"We haven't been able to string two wins together much this season so we need to do it now.'' He reported Stranger had pulled up well from his innings.
