EFL: Magpies sign two big names

01 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
FAMILY and family connections have helped Scoresby land two major signings heading into the Eastern Football League division 1 season.

Former Box Hill Hawk Jayden Hoegel, brother of Magpies forward Chris, has joined the club along with former Pakenham captain Jared Goldsack, who was considered among the best players in the Casey Cardinia Football League.

Goldsack, whose brother Tyson plays for Collingwood, spent much of last season working in Qatar before returning home for the final matches of Pakenham's season.

New Scoresby coach Scott Whyte said both players would add leadership and quality to the young Magpies side.

"Jared is someone who has a great reputation and has that playing experience of having played in premierships," he said.

"His signing came up pretty late in the piece. One of the guys at our club knows Jared's family and heard he had moved back to Melbourne and wanted to play in the EFL division 1.

"So we got in contact with him, offered our playing assistant coaching job and within two weeks of having spoken to him he was signed up."

Whyte is equally excited about Jayden Hoegel, who he believes can become a star midfielder for the Magpies.

"He has been playing as a forward for Box Hill and I think, with the half-step down that EFL division 1 is, he will probably play most of season in the midfield because he has a really good engine. He was looking for a change and the chance to play with his brother.

"He is the sort of player we were looking for because he has speed and uses the football well. We played him at half-back during a practice game and he looked very good, so he could play a few different roles."

The Magpies have otherwise retained the majority of their senior players with only Steve Pimm a confirmed exit.

"The majority of the senior grand final side has stayed on board," Whyte said. "I was never going to bring in a lot of recruits as I wanted to keep the list together.

"I think this will take us out of the market for big-name recruits. New players may join the club and we could give some colts boys a few games."

The Magpies have secured practice matches against Oak Park and Chelsea and hope to lock in other matches for early March.
