EFL: Rowville Hawks rally to win a reserves flag

14 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
BATTERED, bruised but not defeated, Rowville claimed the Eastern Football League division 2 reserves premiership on Saturday.

The Hawks were down four players on the bench and eight points down going into the final quarter but made use of the strong breeze and kicked five goals to none to claim the premiership over reigning premier Waverley Blues.

Hawks coach Tate Burgmann said he was proud of the determined effort his players showed.

"It was a tough game because of the wet and windy conditions which led to some tough, hard footy," he said.

"Waverley came out very aggressive as we knew they would. That style of footy suited them because they had bigger bodies than us.

"In the end we are just rapt. It's a first flag for most of these boys - a lot of them hadn't even won a flag in juniors so it was special to them

"I always had confidence the guys would get the job done in the last term because they have done that for us all season."

The Hawks lost ruckman Peter McPhillips with a dislocated shoulder, midfielder Damian Orlando (knee) and Rory Neate and Sam Blackburn (concussion). Burgmann said all players had recovered in time for 'Mad-Monday' celebrations.

■ Scoresby has all three senior sides in EFL division 1 grand finals at Bayswater Oval this Saturday. The Magpies colts will play Blackburn at 9.10am, their reserves face East Ringwood at 11.45am and the seniors play a re-match of last year's grand final against Noble Park at 2.10pm

The Magpies have lost their last two matches against the Bulls who will start as premiership favourites but if the Magpies can summon the run and carry they showed in their early season win at Pat Wright Senior Oval, they could cause a boilover.
