Family-friendly Cougars hunt for fresh talent

03 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
THE Yarra Valley Cougars women's football club is looking to recruit new players for 2010 and build on past success.

The club, which was established in 2004 and has played finals in all but one of its five Victorian Women's Football League seasons, recently lost several players to retirement and higher levels of competition.

Cougars president Jo Van Mourik said the club was family-friendly and had a strong social element. "We try to keep a family environment in the club so that people can come along with their family and watch the girls play," she said.

Van Mourik said the club would look to collaborate with junior players from Chirnside Park Football Club. They would be eligible to play up to five games each with the Cougars.

"Ultimately, what we want to do is provide a club that players can keep moving on through with their footy."

The club, based in Croydon's Brushy Park, has a trivia night, a raffle night and an end-of-season event each year.

The Cougars train on Monday and Wednesday nights and play on Sundays, starting the week after Easter.

"Our club is open to people of all ages," Van Mourik said. "Last year we had a 39-year-old playing."
