Mounties need to sharpen kicking

01 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
MOUNT Evelyn remains firmly in premiership contention after a 24-point win over Olinda Ferny Creek at Alexandra in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League on Saturday.

Thanks to straight kicking, Olinda Ferny Creek stayed in the clash up until the last quarter before eventually losing 13.4 (82) to 14.22 (106).

Olinda Ferny Creek was out of sorts for most of the day but Mount Evelyn's polished performance will give them confidence heading into Saturday's semi-final against Upwey Tecoma.

At three-quarter time, Mount Evelyn held a 13-point lead, which should have been greater as they had had 26 scoring shots to 13.

Mount Evelyn's kicking woes continued in the final quarter, where they booted 4.7 while Olinda could only manage 2.2, which sent them out of the finals.

Mount Evelyn would not be happy with its inaccuracy, but it had plenty of opportunities and will go into next week against Upwey Tecoma with some confidence.

Mount Evelyn's best were James Charge, Troy Hancock and Christopher Murphy (4 goals) while Andrew Greenall, Garratt McDonald and Patrick Rosier served Olinda Ferny Creek well.

In other finals games, Gembrook Cockatoo defeated Upwey Tecoma 11.9 (75) to 8.15 (63) in Saturday's qualifying final.

Gembrook went one step closer to a grand-final berth with its 12-point victory. Gembrook got out to a 10-point lead at the first change and then managed to stay two kicks ahead of Upwey for the remainder of the game.

This game was always in the balance with Upwey challenging time after time but Gembrook somehow staved off every challenge thrown its way. Gembrook will now take on Woori Yallock with the winner progressing to the grand final.

In the reserves, Warburton Millgrove 13.9 (87) defeated Olinda Ferny Creek 5.9 (39) and Upwey Tecoma 10.16 (76) defeated Mount Evelyn 5.5 (35).

In the under-18s, Healesville 6.14 (50) defeated Warby Gembrook Kookas 3.4 (22) and Upwey Tecoma 11.7 (73) defeated Monbulk 9.8 (62).
