MISERLY Scotland returned to its throne as Knox All-Nations Cup champion beating Australia 1-0 at Egan Lee Reserve on Sunday.
The Scots overcame the loss of captain and leading defender Steven O'Dor before the game, plus being a man down in the first half due to a red-card offence.
Despite those losses, the Scots maintained their unblemished defensive record of not conceding a goal in six tournament matches.
Scotland striker Shane Tagliaferro of Morwell Pegasus scored the winner late in first half after his shot on goal was deflected in off an Australian player.
O'Dor missed the match due to commitments with his Victorian Premier League club South Melbourne.
Scots manager Stan Webster commended his players for their resolve to hold on for so much of the match with just 10 men.
"They did exceptionally well because we had to defend for such a long time," he said. "We were very strong defensively and it says a lot about the team that we could still defend well despite losing O'Dor who was our best player during the tournament."
Scotland gave up few chances in the game despite Australia having a man-advantage although the Aussies were unlucky not to go ahead in the 25th minute when they had a shot hit the post and their rebounding shot also missed the mark.
Webster was also able to share the honour with his sons Stuart, Simon and Scot who played in the side. The trio had previously played together at Frankston Pines in 2003.
Webster said the all-nations gave his players a good lead-in to their VPL and state league pre-season training which begins in the coming weeks.
He also called for several of his players to get looked at by A-League clubs. "Really, several of these players, especially O'Dor, should be playing at A-League level. They are very good players," Webster said.
He praised the tournament for the friendships it created among players.
"A lot of these lads haven't played together since juniors or play against each other in state league but have never played on the same time until now," he said. "So it creates friendships that will last forever."
Knox City FC officials were very pleased with this year's tournament and look forward to again running the event next year, with Egan Lee Reserve to get a new surface and other improvements in the new year.
Knox City will not be playing on the ground in 2012 due to the work but club officials expect it to be ready in time for next year's cup.
