WHETHER it's on the track, or in the pool, Basin Primary School pupil Nathan Percy is ahead of the pack.
Percy competed in the Victorian Primary School state swimming championships, after strong performances at district, zone and regional carnivals.
He swam the 50-metre backstroke in a time of 40.93 seconds, which placed him 13th in his age group.
Percy is also an outstanding cross-country runner, having competed at state level many times at Victorian little athletics and primary schools competitions.
He is well on his way to this level again after beating 200 runners at the district cross country for primary school children last month.
However, Percy's talents aren't restricted to swimming and cross-country.
In a district athletics carnival earlier this year, he was awarded a medal for being the outstanding athlete of his age group.
Last year, he was seventh in the 800 metres at the Victorian little athletics state championships.
Percy is equally adept when it comes to ball sports.
He plays football for The Basin Junior Football Club, and last season won a best and fairest award.
While Percy strives to do his best on the field, he said "keeping fit and making new friends'' was a key reason why he loved sport so much.
He also said his mum, Erin, has been a great source of support.
"She takes me to training, she takes me to footy,
she takes me to cross-country, she takes me everywhere.''
Basin Primary School acting assistant principal and physical education teacher Dale Goldsmith said the Percy boys, Nathan, and older brothers Adam and Luke, were great role models for other children.
"They've really helped develop a sporting culture in the school, and due to a lot of their efforts, the school has experienced a lot of success in sport''.
