WHILE Olympic athletes are fighting it out for gold in Beijing, veteran Knox athletes will begin training for next year's Australian Masters Games.
To be held in Geelong, the Masters Games will provide an opportunity for athletes over the age of 30 to compete in 70 sports. There are traditional endeavours like athletics and swimming, and even sports like bocce and darts.
Knox athletes David Murrihy and Andrew Watts are set to compete in the pentathlon, which includes the 200metres, 1500m, discus, javelin and long jump.
Although the Masters Games are competitive to a degree, Murrihy said athletes enjoyed being out there, and it was rewarding whether you came first or last.
"It is competitiveness with good fun attached," Murrihy said.
He played football and cricket when he was younger and has kept himself active, inspired by his teenage children who are also athletes.
But Murrihy, who has been competing in the Masters Games for 10 years, admits that intense training may take a little bit more out of older athletes than their younger counterparts who are in Beijing.
"Age shall not weary them, but injuries may," Murrihy said.
Registrations are now open for the Masters Games. Details: www.australianmastersgames.com or 1300 725 266.
