SEVERAL people are injured, including two police officers, after a dramatic car chase through Wantirna this afternoon.
Police say the driver of a silver Mazda wagon drove through an automated number plate recognition site on Burwood Highway just before 1.30pm today and clipped a police member’s right elbow.
The police officer chased the driver along Burwood Highway and turned left onto Mountain Highway driving at speeds of more than 100km/h.
The fleeing driver turned left on Wantirna Road and allegedly ran a red light before colliding with a Kia Carnival that was travelling on Boronia Road. A passenger in the Kia suffered minor injuries.
The offender’s car struck a tree and fence on the north-east side of the intersection. The driver allegedly fled from his car but was arrested after a short pursuit.
He again attempted to flee — despite being handcuffed — by running into traffic but he was re-arrested by officers from a second police unit.
A police woman involved with the final chase was taken to hospital after falling on the roadway and hitting her head.
The offender was also later taken to The Alfred hospital after complaining of back pain.
