Don't butt out, police warn drivers

Knox police have again been forced to issue a warning to drivers about throwing cigarette butts out the window after several grass fires in the past week.

Senior Sergeant Phil Edmunds said about six roadside fires had been caused by butts in the past week. ‘‘People flicking cigarette butts are being quite irresponsible.’’ he said. Senior Sergeant Edmunds told the Weekly several weeks ago that he told his members to be vigilant about stopping drivers who had flicked a cigarette butt out the window.

He said he had again reinforced the message to his officers and said penalty notices would be issued. ‘‘It is disregarding the emergency services and work they do,’’ Senior Sergeant Edmunds said.
