Knox pet owners have been reminded to register pets when a renewal notice arrives in their mailbox in coming weeks.
Mayor Karin Orpen said having a registered pet meant the council could locate owners more quickly if the animal went missing.
Payment deadline is April 10. Local laws officers will conduct random doorknocks in April and those residents with unregistered animals will face fines.
