MT Evelyn secured the signature of former AFL forward Damian Cupido last week and their new recruit celebrated the move with eight goals against Woori Yallock on Saturday.
Unfortunately, the injury-riddled Rovers ended the game 13 points adrift as Woori took a close win.
Rovers coach Chris Murphy, who is recovering from a burst appendix, said his side held the lead during the last term but couldn't hang on.
Murphy is one of seven players missing from the the Rovers' best side as injuries and personal commitments continue to bite for the club.
Murphy said he had already seen a boost in his side's confidence following the inclusion of Cupido, who plans to stay with the Rovers for the rest of the season.
Murphy, who played Eastern Ranges football with Cupido when they were teenagers, said he had already been impressed with Cupido's renowned long kicking during his two games with the club.
