SOUTH Belgrave cricket export Glenn Maxwell became the first Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association-raised player to play for Australia in 64 years when he made his one-day international debut late last month.
The 23-year-old all-rounder was selected for Australia's ODI team to play Afghanistan in Sharjah on August 25 and played two matches against Pakistan a few days later.
Maxwell made a modest debut but played a key role in in his second match, against Pakistan, joining George Bailey when Australia was in trouble at 5-121, chasing 198 on a slow pitch.
The pair combined to make 53 with Maxwell making 38 from 38 balls before being given out out leg before wicket. Bailey and Dan Christian went on to make the remaining runs to seal victory.
The FTGDCA has expressed its congratulations for Maxwell for making it to international level.
