If you're a mother, you may watch Motherhood The Musical and think, yes, that's me.
And if you're not, don't worry — cast member Sophie Weiss says you'll enjoy the show just as much.
The show is coming to the Knox Community Arts Centre this month and will be one of the last opportunities to see the production this year.
Motherhood The Musical is about the lives of three mums and one mum-to-be. It's centred around a baby shower the three old hands throw for expectant mum Amy, played by Weiss.
Weiss describes Amy as a naive character, but very likeable because she is "wide-eyed and full of energy". She is about three weeks away from giving birth and thinks the baby is just going to slip effortlessly into her already super-organised life.
However, during the baby shower, the more experienced mothers take the opportunity to fill in Amy on what really happens, and dispel any thoughts she had of a picture-perfect motherhood.
Weiss says Amy has a been a very fun character to play, and often sees audience members nodding along saying "that's me" or "that's my mum".
And women aren't the only ones in the audience. "There are definitely men coming to watch it. It's not as if mums raise the kids all by themselves," Weiss points out.
There's a great variety of music, she says, with everything from upbeat 1960s pop to tear-jerker ballads. She says to watch out for a scene where she dresses up as her mum, as well as a choreographed scene with shopping trolleys.
Weiss studied performing arts at Monash University. This is her debut musical performance. "I've learnt so much from all the other cast members," she said.
Motherhood The Musical will be performed at the Knox Community Arts Centre on September 20 at 8pm. Tickets are $29.50 for adults, $23.50 for concession and $19.50 for students or friends of the centre.
