AN online radio station — the first of its kind in Melbourne — is on the lookout for volunteers who are passionate about women's sport.
Boronia's Will Taylor started Smash FM in 2010 and since then has been covering a variety of sports through weekend commentary and a weekday chat show. The station can only be heard through the Smash FM Facebook site and the page has almost 1500 likes.
Taylor, 22, launched the station because he believed women's sport needed to be promoted more.
And while he knows some of his colleagues at the EFL might not agree, he said women's football at state level was better than men's — "we just need to give it a fair go".
After almost two years of working solo, he's now recruiting volunteers who want to learn about radio and are equally passionate about sport.
Taylor said he "pretty much does everything" for the station from commentating at games, talking about sport on the three weekday programs, sourcing information and monitoring social media.
The station covers a range of sports including basketball, football, soccer, hockey and ice hockey, and he broadcasts the weekday show straight from his Boronia home, using social media to interact with listeners.
"I've had a lot of good feedback about the station from clubs and players," he said.
Some of the coaches even told Taylor they had some new recruits because of his show.
Throughout the year, he has club representatives in his studio to talk about their sport.
His two highlights during his time on air include chats with an elite volleyball team and a champion English netballer, Tamsin Greenway.
"Despite it being a very expensive phone call to England, it was great because she plays the sport at such a high level."
