BAYSWATER scored its first win of the season but didn't get out on the field in its opening round Victorian Sub District Cricket Association match against Ivanhoe on Saturday.
Waters captain Sean Flynn won the toss and chose to bowl, a decision which was soon followed by heavy, prolonged rain which cost any chance of play.
The game will now become a one-day clash at Bayswater Oval this Saturday, and Flynn will need to summon his luck once again as the toss will be redone. "I'm one from one but now we have to start again," Flynn joked.
Flynn said the one-day clash would prove an interesting game as the two clubs hadn't played against each other for a couple of seasons.
He said he hoped the wet weather would stay away as two teenagers would get their debut, with 15-year-old Tim Sugumar and 16-year-old Harry Cowling selected in the side.
Both are all-rounders and have risen up from the Waters' lower grade sides. "It would be nice for them to have the opportunity to have a game," Flynn said. "Tim will be one of the youngest, if not the youngest player to debut in the seniors. He played in our thirds premiership last season and is a really skilful kid."
The side will get a stern test from Ivanhoe, which boasts two English imports and some older, experienced players.
Flynn said Bayswater Oval looked in excellent condition despite hosting the Eastern Football League grand final just a few weeks ago. "The ground was ready on Saturday and it will get better and better over time," he said. "The curator has done tremendous work ."
Bayswater will play Ivanhoe at Bayswater Oval this Saturday at 12.30pm.
