Distemper outbreak hits Knox canines

Dog owners in Knox are being told to keep an eye on their pets after a string of canine distemper cases in Victoria.

Dr Susan Maastrich of the Victorian division of the Australian Veterinary Association said the cases were concerning.

"Canine distemper is not as common now as it has been but it is a highly contagious disease and outbreaks can still occur in areas where vaccination rates are low so it is important not to be complacent about this serious viral disease."

Early signs include high temperature, loss of appetite, lethargy, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and coughing.
